How to Find Dog Friends and Playdates Near You in London

New to the area, or living with a shy or reactive dog? Here is a practical way to find compatible dogs and local owners without relying on luck.

The short answer

To find dog friends in London, go to the same park at the same quiet time for a couple of weeks, introduce your dog to one compatible dog at a time, then turn good meetings into regular playdates. PawsNearMe is a free iOS app that shows live park activity and lets owners in the same area connect their dogs, post in local community areas and organise meetups. It is currently invite-only, began at London Fields in Hackney, and is now available worldwide on the App Store.

Why is it so hard to find dog friends in a big city?

London parks are busy at unpredictable times, most meetings are a few seconds long, and you rarely learn which dogs your dog actually gets on with. If your dog is nervous or reactive, you may avoid the busiest moments altogether, which also means missing the owners who could help.

PawsNearMe's founder, KC Okolo, describes seeing the same owners every morning without ever having the chance to connect with them, and built the app to fix that. The idea is simple: make it easy to see who is around, then make it easy to say hello on your terms.

What makes a good first playdate?

If your dog is regularly fearful or aggressive around other dogs, speak to a qualified trainer or behaviourist. An app can help you find calmer conditions, but it is not a substitute for professional behaviour support. How do you find dog friends near you, step by step?

  1. Learn your park's quiet windows. In PawsNearMe, the live map shows which dogs are active now, and off-peak density alerts tell you when it is calm. See how to check if the dog park is busy before you leave the house.
  2. Set up your dog's profile. Each dog gets their own profile with breed information, and you can add as many dogs as you like.
  3. Join your local community area. Community areas are map-based hubs around popular dog-walking spots, where members post updates, organise events and see stats such as peak times and popular hours.
  4. Send dog-to-dog friend requests. Connect your dog with the dogs you already see on your walks.
  5. Organise or join a meetup. Events can be playdates, group walks, training sessions or open meet-ups. Set a location, invite people or open it to your area. Invited users get a push notification and can RSVP.
  6. Set your privacy controls. Choose who sees you on the map and in search, and use Ghost Mode to hide your location while walking.
